Living by the Water: A Nautical Garden

Marblehead, Massachusetts offers a unique appeal. It has preserved colonial architecture. The town has a deep maritime history as a major fishing and yachting center. It also has a picturesque coastal setting with narrow, historic streets. I fell in love with this town at first sight. I wanted to create a garden that would celebrate the ocean and the town’s connection to it. I integrated various nautical elements into my garden and home. This makes it feel like I am bringing the ocean to my door.

The first step I made was to replace the mulch in my inkberry hedge in front of my home with hundreds of pounds of seashells.

We painted the home a light blue. When walking down my street, you can see the ocean in the harbor. The color of my home beautifully complements it.

I found a weather vane on our local Facebook marketplace. I also found a concrete container at the Brimfield Antique Show. It is shaped like a boat and sits in the front corner of my garden.

I added larger seashells within my garden to add interest to bare spots. They help provide interest, especially in the spring and early summer, before my perennials fill in the spaces.

I also added nautical touches to my porch. I used an old oar to paint our house number on. I designed a staircase in the rear of the house with a fishing net as the gate. I used boat rope cleats and rope to instead of spindles to add another nautical touch.

I also installed lights on my porch that have a nautical feel which helps to tie the theme all the way around my home.
