The Newport Flower Show brings together floral design, gardening, horticulture, and creativity each summer. I attended the 2025 show at Rosecliff Mansion in Newport, Rhode Island. The show began in 1996 and has become a popular Newport summer tradition. This was my first visit, so I arrived eager to explore.
I looked forward to seeing the floral designs and horticultural displays. I also wanted to discover new ideas for my own floral work.
A Floral Fair at Rosecliff Mansion
The 2025 Newport Flower Show featured the theme “A Floral Fair.” The theme connected two very different sources of inspiration.
First, floral designers explored the life of Theresa Fair Oelrichs. She originally owned the magnificent Rosecliff Mansion. Her 1913 fairy-tale dinner inspired many floral designs. The exhibitors created imaginative arrangements based on this fascinating piece of history.
The second theme brought the excitement of a summer county fair. This idea created a playful atmosphere throughout the show.
Spectacular Floral Designs
The Floral Design and Botanical Arts exhibits offered plenty of inspiration. Each designer interpreted the themes in a unique way.
Some arrangements featured bold colors and dramatic shapes. Others used delicate flowers and subtle combinations. One display followed the Yellow Brick Road theme. Another arrangement brought the story of The Princess and the Pea to life.
I loved seeing how each designer approached the challenge. The arrangements showed tremendous creativity and technical skill. Moreover, many designs used unexpected materials and containers. These details added another layer of interest to the displays.
Horticulture and Garden Displays
The show continued outside on the terrace and lawn. The gardens offered spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Meanwhile, the Horticultural Division showcased beautiful plants and cut flowers. Garden clubs and amateur gardeners competed in several categories. The displays featured colorful blooms and interesting plant combinations. They also demonstrated the incredible talent of local gardeners. I always enjoy seeing how gardeners present their favorite plants. These displays often inspire ideas that I can use in my own garden.
The Horticultural Division and Garden Display brought the themes to life with competitions of delightful plants, vibrant cut flowers, and breathtaking displays crafted by skilled amateur gardeners and local garden clubs. A marketplace was also on hand that showcased high-end boutiques and garden elements.
A Beautiful Newport Setting
Rosecliff Mansion provides a spectacular setting for the Newport Flower Show. The historic architecture creates a beautiful backdrop for the floral designs.
Outside, the gardens lead toward the ocean. Visitors can enjoy the flowers while taking in the incredible coastal views.
The combination of flowers, gardens, architecture, and ocean makes this event special. Each element adds something different to the experience.
More Than a Flower Show
The Newport Flower Show offers much more than floral competitions. Visitors can attend lectures and demonstrations from gardening experts.
The marketplace also features boutiques and garden-related items. I enjoyed browsing the different offerings between the floral exhibits.
Most importantly, the event supports historic preservation. Proceeds benefit the Preservation Society of Newport County.
The funds help maintain and preserve Newport’s historic mansions and gardens. That mission gives the event an even greater purpose.
Looking Forward to the Newport Flower Show
My first Newport Flower Show exceeded my expectations. I found inspiration around every corner. The floral designs offered creative ideas for flower arranging. The horticultural displays provided plenty of gardening inspiration. At the same time, the historic setting made the experience memorable. Rosecliff Mansion created the perfect backdrop for this celebration of flowers.
I look forward to returning to the Newport Flower Show. Next time, I may even enter one of the competitions!
